5 Reasons To Go Organic

Hi there,

A question that we often get asked is “why should I go organic?” or ‘what’s the big deal about organic?’

In 2009 I almost lost my life to illness…. thats a whole blog entry on it’s own… However I mention this because this was the beginning of my journey into researching ingredients in food, farming practices and the use of chemicals and pesticides. I made a real commitment to eat clean, organic food and this, along with a few other changes I made, means that today I live! And I live a healthy, joyful life!

So lets look at the top 5 reasons to GO ORGANIC!

WHY ORGANIC?

Agricultural chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers are contaminating our environment, poisoning our precious water supplies, and destroying the value of fertile farmland. Certified organic standards do not permit the use of toxic chemicals in farming and require responsible management of healthy soil and biodiversity.

1. Avoid chemicals

Did you know that more than 600 active chemicals are registered for agricultural use in America, to the tune of billions of pounds annually? The average application equates to about 16 pounds of chemical pesticides per person every year. Many of these chemicals were approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) before extensive diet testing.

The National Academy of Sciences reports that 90% of the chemicals applied to foods have not been tested for long-term health effects before being deemed "safe." Furthermore, the FDA tests only 1% of foods for pesticide residue. The most dangerous and toxic pesticides require special testing methods, which are rarely if ever employed by the FDA.

Newspaper articles can say what they like… but I feel the difference, along with every friend and family member who has followed suit. There has been improvements in many health issues amongst us - from a major decrease in hay fever symptoms, to reductions of headaches and migraines.

I recall a study done on a family in Sweden where they were all switched to organic food for 2 weeks. Urine samples were taken at the beginning (everyone’s urine was found to contain a lot of chemicals and pesticides) and then again after 2 weeks of organic food consumption. The second round of tests found that the chemicals had drastically decreased and were even eradicated in some of the family’s urine samples. Unfortunately the research company are being sued…for apparently misleading the nation…

You only have to look at who is suing them to understand… 9 angry pesticide companies… go figure…

There is no denying that a slow and steady intake of chemicals, heavy metals such as cadmium and pesticides eventually affect your health and your quality of life.

There are articles stating that some organic produce still contains some pesticides and chemicals. These were all from the US and the US organic certification does still allow a number of chemicals/pesticides/herbicides to be used and farmers/manufacturers will still be granted organic status.

This is NOT organic in our view and the EU is different.

If I am investigating an American manufacturer for Eden Organic, I am super strict about making absolutely sure that they use absolutely zero chemicals/pesticides/herbicides in any of their ingredients.

So to sum it up:

Agricultural chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers are contaminating our environment, poisoning our precious water supplies, and destroying the value of fertile farmland. Certified organic standards do not permit the use of toxic chemicals in farming and require responsible management of healthy soil and biodiversity.

Pesticide residues form part of the dangerous food contaminants known to exert genotoxic, carcinogenic, neuro-destructive, endocrine and allergenic effects, and are usually found in higher contents in non-organically farmed plant products.

2) Benefit from more nutrients

In 2009, a Food Standards Agency (FSA) commissioned study looked at 46 publications and found there to be no substantial difference between organic & non-organic crops, meat & dairy.

There have been a number of much larger meta-analyses conducted over the last few years specifically looking at whether organic crops do actually contain higher nutrient value and less cadmium and pesticide residue than non-organic crops. In 2014, an international team of experts, led by Newcastle University, reviewed data from 343 peer-reviewed publications found that organic crops are up to 60% higher in a number of key antioxidants:

“Most importantly, the concentrations of a range of antioxidants such as polyphenolics were found to be substantially higher in organic crops/crop-based foods… many of these compounds have previously been linked to a reduced risk of chronic diseases, including CVD and neurodegenerative diseases and certain cancers, in dietary intervention and epidemiological studies. Additionally, the frequency of occurrence of pesticide residues was found to be four times higher in conventional crops, which also contained significantly higher concentrations of the toxic metal Cd. Significant differences were also detected for some other (e.g. minerals and vitamins) compounds.

In conclusion, organic crops, on average, have higher concentrations of antioxidants, lower concentrations of Cd (cadmium) and a lower incidence of pesticide residues than the non-organic comparators across regions and production seasons.” (Baranski, et al. British Journal of Nutrition. Sept 2014)

Another huge NEW meta-analysis conducted in 2016 also found that there is 50% more omega 3 fatty acids in organic dairy and meat. Probably as a result of animals foraging on healthier, omega-3 rich grass. These findings were based on data pooled from more than 200 studies. (Srednicka-Tober, et al. British Journal of Nutrition. March 2016)

MAKE INFORMED CHOICES

Research takes time. It is always important to look at the latest science. I wonder if, the fact that, more chemicals and pesticides are being used in non-organic farming methods, means that there is more of a stark difference in nutritional value and impact on health, making it more important than ever to consider the quality of food and the levels of toxins that we consume and give to our children?

There are a few human epidemiological studies looking at the direct health effects of eating organic food. One of the largest, conducted in 2006 and looked at just under 15 000 children over 5 European countries, associates consumption of organic foods with lower rates of allergies too (PARSIFAL STUDY, Alfven, et al. 2006)

It makes me wonder if consuming organic foods makes us more resilient? These crops and produce contain all the antioxidants and compounds necessary to make the plant resilient to the environment. These studies seem to be suggesting that this is the case. This is definitely one of the major, visible health benefits that we have all noticed.

3) Avoid GMO

Genetically engineered (GE) food and genetically modified organisms (GMO) are contaminating our food supply at an alarming rate, with repercussions beyond understanding. Because organically grown food cannot be genetically modified in any way, choosing organic is the only way to be sure that foods that have been genetically engineered stay out of your diet.

4) Avoid hormones, antibiotics and drugs in animal products

Conventional meat and dairy are the highest risk foods for contamination by harmful substances. More than 90% of the pesticides that we consume are found in the fat and tissue of meat and dairy products.

Antibiotics, drugs, and growth hormones (in some countries) are also directly passed into meat and dairy products. Tens of millions of pounds of antibiotics are used in animal feed every year. Infectious diseases are encouraged by the overcrowded and stressful conditions in which animals live in factory farms.  It is common in the UK and European Union for animals such as pigs and poultry to be fed antibiotics in their feed and water not to cure disease (therapeutic use) but to suppress infections that are likely to arise in factory farm conditions (non-therapeutic or preventative use).

When animals are fed an antibiotic that is closely related to those used in human medicine, cross-resistance occurs and disease-causing bacteria become resistant to the drugs used in human medicine.

Karim Ahmed, PhD, a senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) states that it "is perhaps one of the most serious public health problems that we face. We're talking about rendering many of the most important antibiotics ineffective.”

Choosing organic animal products is unyieldingly important, especially for children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.

5) Preserve our ecosystems

Organic farming supports eco-sustenance, or farming in harmony with nature.

Preservation of soil and crop rotation keep farmland healthy, and chemical abstinence preserves the ecosystem. Wildlife, insects, frogs, birds, and soil organisms are able to play their roles in the tapestry of ecology, and we are able to play ours, without interference or compromise.
